In order to maximize the efficiency of potential diagnostic skills of Technicians, HLU has developed a Road Performance Assessment (RPA) Training Program over the years as part of the Motorhome Steering and Suspension Institute (MSSi). Since the training institute was established in 1999, the training program has been held at Henderson’s Line Up in Grants Pass, Oregon.
Technicians, Service Advisors, Service Managers, and Shop Owners attend from around the country to learn the successful system of the RPA for diagnosing and solving steering and suspension problems. The RPA involves a 15 mile road test to duplicate the symptoms of steering and suspension problems by driving on uneven, narrow, curved, bumpy, and straight roads. Once the road test is completed, the coach is driven over the Inspection Bay for 50 plus points of inspection. Students learn that upon completion of the RPA, the customer is given a completed RPA Form and an explanation of the problems and solutions needed to correct these conditions. The customer then decides what work will be done.
The Motorhome Steering and Suspension Institute also conducts an Installation of Suspension and Steering Components session. Instructors teach how to professionally install suspension and steering parts on a motorhome chassis. Some of the featured parts include anti-sway bars, trac bars, bell cranks, motion control units, steering controls, braking components, steering gears, and tow brakes.
The Motorhome Steering and Suspension Institute provides critical training to avoid the ineffective Band-Aid approach of repair found at some facilities. At the MSSi, Technicians are trained to spend more time evaluating the nature and cause of the problem up front, thereby assuring satisfactory repairs and gaining happy, loyal customers. MSSi classes are held in the spring and fall. For more information, please call 888-898-3281.
